Is Your Home Ready For A Pet?

Getting a pet is a wonderful thing. A pal for life, they are with you through many exciting events in your life. However, when you are planning to bring a dog or cat into your home, it’s important that you get the house ready for their arrival. No matter whether they are a puppy/kitten or a rescue pet, there are certain things that you need to organise before the big day.

Pet Proofing

Pet proofing is a crucial step in preparing your home for your new arrival. To do this, get down to their level on the floor – what can you see? If you have any loose cables, shoes lying around, etc. your pet might be very tempted to get their paws on them.

Not only should you tidy away anything that you don’t want to be torn apart, but you should also pay attention to any hazardous items – such as plants that are unsafe and poisonous foods. You should also tightly close your bin and ensure that the following is out of their reach: garden tools, cleaning products, toys that they could choke on and medications.

Purchase All The Supplies

Before your new pet comes home, stock up on all the supplies you need.

For a new dog you will need:

  • A collar with an ID tag
  • Puppy pads (which can also work wonders with rescue dogs that aren’t yet house trained).
  • Food: try to look for the best wet dog food, by researching the most suitable. If you are adopting a dog, check with the rescue centre about what food they are currently on.
  • Food and water bowls
  • Treats
  • A lead
  • Poo bags
  • A bed
  • Toys

For a new cat you will need:

  • A collar and ID tag
  • A litter box
  • Cat litter
  • Scratching posts
  • Food
  • Toys
  • A cat carrier
  • Food and water bowls

Prepare A Personal Space For Them

It’s also important to organise a spot in the house where your pet will stay most of the time. A space that they feel safe and relaxed in, they will sleep in that spot at night. Whether it’s a bed, basket or crate, it’s essential that you set it up before bringing them home.

Get Them Lots of Toys

If you’re getting a new dog, buy them lots of toys that they can chew on – you don’t want them chewing on your furniture/shoes or other items! A way that they can exert their energy, toys are also a wonderful treat for them.

Similarly, when you get a cat, you should buy them toys that they can push around. From toys with bells to balls of yarn, they love their playtime.

Be Prepared For A Settling in Period

As it will take a while for them to settle, you need to ensure that you take the time to help them get comfortable with their surroundings. If you have a puppy or a kitten, they might cry during the night as they are adjusting. And although it might be tempting to bring them into bed and soothe them, you shouldn’t do this. Instead, ensure they stay in a comfortable and quiet place whilst they are settling.

When you get a rescue dog or cat, it will take a while before they feel comfortable in their new environment. Building a bond with you and getting to understand what they can and can’t do, you must be patient with them. Every member of the family should be consistent with what they do so that the cat or dog begins to learn.

Secure All Windows and Doors

When introducing a pet into your home, they will undoubtedly be curious. And with that curiosity comes the temptation for them to jump out of windows/walk through doors they shouldn’t. Make sure that you secure all of the escape routes in your house – as well as the bathroom door so that they aren’t tempted to drink from the toilet.
