What is a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplantation is when hair follicles are removed from a part of the scalp where the hair is denser thus these hair are then transplanted to the treatment area (bald area). Hair transplantation has a high success rate as long as there is enough donor’s hair. You usually will be having this procedure at the clinic itself. First, the doctor cleans your scalp and injects anesthesia to numb your head. Your doctor will choose one of two methods for transplantation: follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).

With FUSS, your doctor removes the 6-6-inch strip of skin from the back of the head. Then the scalp is stitched to close it. This area is hidden by the hair around it.

Next, the doctor divides the scalp strips into 500 to 2,000 small graphs, each with an individual hair or just a few hairs. This depends on the type of hair, the quality, the color, and the size of the area in which it was transferred.

For the FUE procedure, the doctor will shave the back of your scalp. Then, he will remove the hair follicles one by one. After he prepares the craft, he then creates a hole or slit with a scalpel or needle, and places each hair follicle in one of the holes.

Depending on the size of the transplantation that you are getting, the process will take about 4 to 8 hours. You may need another procedure later if you continue to lose hair or decide you want thicker hair.

After the surgery, your scalp may be very soft and slightly pain due to the effect of the surgery. You may need to take painkillers for a few days. Your surgeon will put a bandage on your scalp for at least a day or two. He may also prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs for a few days. Most people can return to work 2 to 5 days after the surgery.

Within 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery, the transplanted hair will fall, but you should start seeing new growth within a few months. Most people will see 60% of new hair growth after 6 to 9 months. Since these hair roots are permanent in nature, when they are planted in the bald area of your head, the new hair which grows also becomes permanent. Therefore, yes, you will never lose them again. Some surgeons prescribe Minoxidil (Rogaine) to boost hair growth after transplant.

However, as with any type of surgery, hair transplantation carries several risks, including bleeding and infection. There is also a risk for new and unnatural hair growth.

Some people might develop inflammation or infection of the hair follicles, called folliculitis. Antibiotics and cold compresses can alleviate the problem. It is also possible for the patient to suddenly lose some natural hair in the transplanted area, known as shock loss. But most of the time, it is only temporary.
