Differences Between Types of Packaging Boxes and Packaging Materials

The most common packaging boxes, which are also known as cartons, are manufactured from a combination of cardboard, fiberboards or paperboards. The folding methods also differ depending on the needs. For instance, if a product is to be transported in an aircraft, there are special packaging methods that should be followed. Thus, it is necessary to choose the correct folding method.

The most commonly used packaging materials in the market include rigid boxes, flexible cartons and folding cartons. Fluid form packaging, the most cost-effective and environment-friendly packaging methods available, includes polythene, polystyrene, polypropylene and polyurethane. Over the years, various designs have evolved and new materials have been introduced for packaging purposes. These include bubble wrap, corrugated cartons, shrink wrap, hard plastic, thermoplastics, and thermal insulating materials, to name a few.

When it comes to corrugated packaging boxes, a great many advantages come with it, the foremost among them being its energy efficiency. Since it is made up of corrugated paperboard, it is very easy to make. A single box can account for the energy consumption of about 5kg of material. It is ideal for products that are light weight and need minimal packing. Such products are commonly used in food items, beverage products, personal care and cosmetic products.

On the other hand, the standard folding paperboard boxes have different types of materials in their construction. They can either be made up of corrugated paperboard or of flexible nylon. While corrugated boxes are best suited for corrugated products, the folding paperboard boxes are more suitable for products that need to be compressed and stored over long durations. The rigid type on the other hand, is perfect for those products that are sensitive to high levels of temperature. This is because they are constructed from materials such as polystyrene.

All said and done, these two packaging options have their own advantages and disadvantages. For those in need of energy efficiency, the corrugated boxes and folding cartons are the way to go. However, those in need of additional packing space would do well with the plastic versions. As for those in need of extra protection for delicate products, the rigid variety is quite handy. All in all, the choice depends on the specific product type. For those in need of standard packaging, paperboard boxes and folding cartons are quite suitable.

In terms of safety, both the paperboard and corrugated boxes are safe to use, provided you follow the proper storage procedures. For those in need of a higher level of security, however, the rigid box cartons are definitely the way to go. They are made of a hard material and are therefore highly secured. It can even be made to perfectly fit almost any shape and size. Lastly, when it comes to convenience, nothing comes close to the foldable packaging boxes that are available in a lot of different colors, shapes, and sizes.
